Schisandra chinensis (Turcx.) Baill. (northern wu wei zi):in Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Hebei provinces of China.

Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd. (southern wu wei zi):in south western part of China and in provinces south of Yangtze (Yang Zi) river of China.

"北五味子" ，主產於中國東北之吉林，遼寧，黑龍江等省與河北省； "南五味子"，主產於西南及長流域以南各省。

Properties (characteristics):

性味：

warm, sweet, bitter, sour, acrid, salty but prominently sour.

性溫，五味(甘苦酸辛鹹)皆具備，但酸 鹹較多

Actions & Indications:

應用﹕

stops asthmatic cough, helps correct shenxu (kidney deficient)  condition, treats spermatorrhea, stops instant sweating, promotes saliva, quenches thirst, calms emotion, palpitation, helps to prevent insomnia, lower ALT and AST, treats chronic hepatitis.

止 咳 喘 ， 滋 腎 固 精 ，治 腎 虛 遺精 ， 收 斂 止 瀉 ， 固 表 止 汗，治自 汗 ， 生 津 止 渴 ， 養 心 安 神 治心 悸 失 眠 。 降 轉 氨 脢 ， 治 療 慢 性 肝 炎 。

Medical Function:

藥理:

1. helps prevent liver damage; helps to metabolize drugs for liver; lowering ALT and AST. The chemical ingredient, lignan can help regenerate liver tissues due to harmful influence like viruses and alcohol.

4. helps regulate CNS; improves efficiency of brain activities and improves efficiency of work process

5. anti hypertension but during exhaustion of circulatory function, it can help to bring up blood pressure.

6. effect on respiratory system: Lowers oxygen requirement, correct respiratory exhaustion; works better than Coramine or nikethamide. It helps to expectorate phlegm and sooths coughing.

Lignans 木脂素類: schizandrin, deoxyschisandrin, gamma-schisandrin, schisandrol, pseudo-gamma-schisandrin, wuweizisu C, (schisandrol A, B), schizandrate B, gomisin A, B, C, F, G, angeloylgomisin H, tigloylgomisin H, benzoylgomisin H, epigomisin O, angeloylgomisini O, pregomisin, angeloyisogomisin O, benzoylisogomisin O, isoschisandrin, rubschisantherin, rubschisandrin, schisanhenol acetate, schisanhenol B, schisanhenol, pregomisin, schisantherin, neoschizanrin, meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid.

Dosage:

用量：

Usual dosage : 1.5 to 9 g. For chronic cough: 1.5 g ~ 3 g. For tonic: 6 to 9 g.

Boiled with water: 1.5 to 9 g.

Used in powder form: 1 to 3 g.

1.5 ~ 9 克 。水煎 1.5 ~ 9 克 。

久咳嗽 1.5 ~ 3 克 。

研 末 服 每 次 1- 3 克 。

Cautions:

禁 忌：

Not to be used by patients with ulcers, or epilepsy,  or by those over exercise, or with high pressure in the cranium, cold or flu no yet clear, early stage of cough with internal heat, and those with early stage of  measles.

Use wu wei zi together with sulfonamides may cause bleeding in the urinary tract.

潰瘍或 癲癇發作﹐運動過度﹐顱內高壓之病人禁用。表邪未解 ﹐內有實熱 咳嗽初起 ﹐ 麻疹初發者忌服 。

五味子與磺胺類藥 (sulfonamides) 同時使用可能會引起血尿。
